This was not the reaction that Meg had been expecting. When he slid from her and moved back, she leaned up on her elbows, her brow furrowed in confusion as she gazed at the man who had just moments before howled in pleasure while making love to her. She didn't understand why suddenly he looked as though he were afraid her non-existant husband might come home and catch them in the act, or the other way around.
Quote:
Fear came to his golden-green eyes as he stared down at her. He blinked, unable to look away. “What have we done?” His voice was a whisper, full of awe and panic.
"What?" she asked with a disbelieving frown. "What do you mean, what have we done?" It was difficult for Meg to not feel completely insulted by his reaction to what she had considered pure rapture. In her opinion, it had been the most glorious time she had ever spent with another being, human or not. Kane had taken her to a whole different world it seemed.. it had been erotic and beautiful... heaven on earth. So why, now, did he suddenly seem full of such regret?
And then it dawned on her, as she recalled the story that he had told her in the caves. She remembered how he believed in fate and how he believed that fate had punished him for taking a human as his bride. Meg knew better than to chide him for it now. It was quite obvious that he was strong in his beliefs and telling him that it was ridiculous would just have a negative impact. Instead she reached over and touched the side of his face with her hand, allowing her fingers to slide over his warm, flushed cheek. "We made love," she whispered to him gently, trying her best to soothe him. "We made love and it was magic."

Meg’s voice was like velvet against Kane’s ears. Soft, soothing; it made his cock twitch even though he was spent. Her palm against his cheek was like a kiss from heaven, and even as his heart continued to pound forcefully in his chest, his breathing slowed; the fear temporarily fading from him like a forgotten nightmare.
Kane collapsed on top of her; his ear pressed to her taunt belly. The wolf prayed the Gods would spare her the same fate they cursed his wife; for the remnants of his forbidden love was now slick against her inner thighs.
“I only wish to keep from misery. It is, as you said, a magical thing, but the Fates are miraculous as well; fair and luscious like a woman, but evil of soul like the most venomous serpent.”
Kane propped his chin up on her stomach, the edges of his tousled hair just long enough to tickle her belly button. His ochre gaze lifted to hers; one hand absently running over her smooth hip as if he couldn’t bear not to touch her.
“It was selfish of me to invade your life this way, Meg. I cannot pretend to be tame, nor can I pretend to be a man...”
His hand stopped running along her side and dropped to delicately finger the place between her legs that was sticky and smell of his mark. “But it would be a lie if I did not admit I ache for you; in body as well as my soul. I cannot fathom this connection to you, but it is there just the same.”
Kane’s tone was full of admiration and trepidation; pleading. “I do not know where to go from here...”

Meg played idly with his tangled locks, gently massaging the back of his head and his neck as she listened to him. His words were heartbreaking... she hated the idea that she was bringing him stress or pain. And she knew even as she listened to him that things between them were never going to be easy. He was afraid that the 'fates' or whatever would take her from him. How in the world was SHE going to convince the others in the hunters' circle not to kill him? She swallowed thickly, a worried expression crossing her face... but it faded quickly when he slid his hand between her legs. She gasped, her eyes rolling back in pleasure as she shifted her hips and let out a little whimper.
For a moment she lost all train of thought, completely content to just allow him to toy with her... but she had things that needed to be said... things that she'd never manage to get out if he continued to touch her so intimately. Leaning up on one elbow, she gently reached down and grasped his wrist lightly, stilling his movements. With a soft sigh she shifted downward on the bed until she was lying beside him, and she rolled onto her side facing Kane so that she could look him in the eyes.
"Humans have a saying that you may or may not have heard," she told him gently, trying not to give away that she feared similar things that he did. "They say it's better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all." Meg reached up and pushed the wild locks of sunbleached hair away from his face and leaned in to gently kiss his lips. "If something were to happen to me, it wouldn't be because you are being punished, Kane. It would be because I'm just a simple human and we aren't MEANT to live forever. It would be because the life I have chosen is a dangerous one. I risk my life every day being a hunter... just to do my part to keep innocent people safe... and I don't regret it one bit."
Meg reached up to caress his face, gazing adoringly into his eyes as her thumb brushed lightly over his cheekbone. "Don't be afraid to live."

Kane’s eyes widened as Meg caught his wrist and then lifted his hand away from her thigh. A disappointed rumble echoed from his throat, and he sighed in resignation as she rolled him off of her body to lie beside him. He already missed the feel of her body against his; a simple connection of skin against skin. Meg’s gaze found his and held it firmly; though the wolf was full of uncertainty and trepidation, her dark eyes shone with resolve; softened around the edges with a look that could only be descried as adoration. It filled Kane with so many unfathomable emotions; elation; protectiveness, pride, fear...
He listened intently as she spoke of human proverbs, his eyes drawn to her ample lips as they moved; recollections of their taste making his mouth water with thirst. The wolf’s brow furrowed slightly at her belief of lost love; and he nearly shook his head in disagreement, but instead leaned in to accept her kiss with an impetuous desperation. Kane had loved and lost, and he would have given anything not to feel the loss and pain that came with loosing his wife and unborn child. If he’d never met her, things would have never happened as they did. She would have lived, and perhaps, he would still be with his pack. His reveries and the pent up misery seemed to flow through his body and out of his spirit through the lips pressed against his. His body sagged and he reached to grasp her chocolate locks; urgently holding onto the embrace as long as he could.
When Meg broke the kiss, Kane let his fingers loosen, but still remain tangled in her hair. His breath caught at her courageous words; and in that moment he was reminded of the fearlessness of Madailéin. Meg was a warrior just as she had been; a brave and resolute soldier, though the enemies were much different. The enemies were beasts like him. It made his heart drop at the same time as it soared. No wonder he loved her already.
Drawing his tongue across his bottom lip, Kane blinked his golden eyes in wonder. Her words echoed through his soul and he suddenly realized that the only way he could really live was by her side.
“I haven’t felt more alive in centuries.” He confessed; tilting his head slightly to one side as her thumb ghosted across his cheek. “Because of this...because of you.”
The hand tangled in her hair drew her forward, bringing their lips together once more. He wanted to express to her that he meant to stay with her for as long as she would have him; despite their profound differences, though he could not find the words. He let his lips speak for him.

For a moment, all Meg could do was marvel over the complete control that Kane had over her body, even with the simplest of touches. Where just minutes before, he had made every one of her muscles go rigid with the pleasure of intense orgasm, now his adoring kiss and gentle touch seemed to carry away every stress... every burden she had ever had to endure. She felt like all of the worries that normally weighed heavily on her shoulders were gone, drawn out through his fingertips... his lips... his tongue.
It seemed that his initial reaction of fear had faded away, at least for now, and for that she was grateful. Now that she finally had him here she was afraid that he would disappear. In fact, she knew that eventually they would part ways again and she felt herself dreading that moment. Kane was so hard to read, and even more difficult to predict. He seemed so uncertain about things between the two of them... she knew that he was battling inwardly between his heart, which told him to stay with her, and his head, which told him to get as far away as possible.
"Will you stay here with me tonight?" she asked him. She wondered when was the last time that he had actually slept in a normal human bed such as this one... if he ever had. If he was used to the firmness of the hard ground, she wondered if he would find the bed too soft for his liking, or if he would consider it a luxury. "Jake and Alyssa are going to be gone for at least another few days I'm sure... so we've got the house all to ourselves," she said with a sly smirk, pecking him softly on the lips.
